DE Jack Sawyer (All B1G)

Dude looked like a Bosa out there.

Just sayin': Potentially even better than Bosa (if that is even possible)........8D

Just think about the possible bookend DEs Ohio State would have in the next few years if they sign J.T. Tuimoloau too (which one would you try to double team?....:boogie:):

You'd have to go all the way back to the (early) 2018 season when we had Nick Bosa on one side and Chase Young on the other to find such a dilemma for the opposing OL.

This mf gonna end up being a better pro prospect than Chase and the Bosa bros. He will be wrecking some shit in a few months when the season starts.

I love hearing the hyperbole like this everytime we talk about another 5star DE. Because Nick was going to be better than Joey, Chase better than Nick, and now Jack better than them all!

The hype train for Jack Sawyer has been filling up quickly. As a high school player at Pickerington North, Sawyer became a five-star prospect and the country’s third-best strongside defensive end in the 2021 class, per the 247Sports Composite. His commitment to Ohio State in February of 2019 meant instant comparisons to former Scarlet and Gray stars of the same position such as the Bosa brothers and Chase Young.

Throughout his first spring as a Buckeye after enrolling early in January, the freshman impressed. Sawyer performed well enough at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center that defensive line coach Larry Johnson referred to Sawyer as “a special player” earlier this month and that, assuming he continues his development, Ohio State was “going to find a role for him” as a freshman next fall.

On Saturday, Buckeye fans finally got to see Sawyer in action. While it was just in a spring game, the defensive end got everyone’s attention with his first performance in a scarlet and gray uniform at Ohio Stadium.

“He is off to a great start for sure,” head coach Ryan Day said of Sawyer after the spring game. “He’s just earning more and more reps, he’s working his way up the depth chart. I think across the board, our D-line was solid this year. We have some good depth there. But Jack, in particular, came in with a lot of confidence and he’s made a lot of plays.”

It might be hyperbole, but Sawyer will have a chance to the best DE on the team from day one, because the current DEs have woefully underperformed so far.

So in 105 games - that's seven full seasons - the five current DEs have basically accomplished what Joey Bosa and Chase Young accomplished in one season each. We like to talk about the lack of production from the DBs last season (and rightly so), but the DEs certainly did not do much to help the cause. And the lack of production from the DEs was especially inexcusable because the DT play from Togiai and Garrett was generally stellar.

If Sawyer gives us 2013 Joey Bosa production (13.5 TFL; 7.5 sacks; 6 QBH; PBU) then I will be thrilled ... and he will be the best DE on the team.

Just sayin': Yeah me too; but, I'm not 100% sold on Sawyer being able to put up Joey Bosa numbers in 2021 ether. It would really be interesting to see Sawyer in the #1 defensive unit go up against the #1 offensive unit and see how he performs. If he can beat Munford and/or Petit-Frere he can beat anybody we play against in 2021. Regardless I do think the DL will be the strength of the defense in 2021. Also, the DL will be even stronger and deeper if we land J.T. Tuimoloau.

OHIO STATE: JACK SAWYER, DE

We could take the obvious route for Ohio State and highlight anticipated first-year starting quarterback C.J. Stroud, but pass-rusher is spot where the Buckeyes are more pressed to have someone step up as a game-changer with Baron Browning, Jonathon Cooper and Tommy Togiai all now gone from Columbus. Will true freshman Jack Sawyer answer the call after an eye-popping first spring on campus? The Ohio native signed with the Buckeyes as 5-star prospect and ranked as the No. 4 prospect in the nation for the 2021 cycle, so his potential speaks for itself. Between the Bosa brothers and Chase Young, to name just a few, Ohio State has produced plenty of stars at this spot in recent seasons, and the hope at Ohio State is that Sawyer is next in line to terrorize quarterbacks on Saturdays in the fall.
