Amen. Kerry is indeed an all time favorite and I get the criticism, I have been in the same crowd lately because it is clear we need a change at DC. However, I am not going to file a meaningless "petition" online to remove him, he deserves better from our fans after what he has contributed to our team overall. Not too long ago we were cheering for his return, now you have our fans pulling stunts like this?

That said, I am not sure what to do on Day's end. You have very few legitimate options at this point to hire from the outside, and I am not sure we have someone from the inside that would be an improvement. With those things considered, if we are truly searching for a replacement before the end of the year, then it better be a fairly certain improvement over Coombs. Whether that is available is way above my pay grade here at BP, but I just really wish people would think about the fact that this was one loss and while the defense needs to be put in different hands, Coombs bleeds S&G and has done a lot for this program and its players/fans. People need to act accordingly.

Yes and I think the only option is to wait until the year is over. At that point every coordinator minus Venables is on the table basically. Go get the very best coordinator (already employed as well as available) who has experience calling the shots and more importantly give them full autonomy to do what's necessary to fix it.

Like you point out RB, just 1.5 years ago we were all excited to have Kerry back and we all thought this was a home run. We all know Ryan Day thought so as well. Barring some sort of miracle turnaround though it's just obvious we need someone who's done this before. You can't cut your teeth gaining experience at OSU you have to hit the ground running.

So hopefully we turn this around but if we don't we should all back off of Kerry because it's already obvious what's going to happen here.

I don't think that reception was all that unanimous. We got caught by surprise by Hafley leaving for BC (which still makes no sense to me unless he's waiting in the wings for the Notre Dame job) and Day's hand was forced. We overpaid and over-promoted a career position coach/recruiter, but this should've been an interim solution or at least there should've been (hopefully, was) a solid contingency plan when/if things weren't up to expectation with Coombs. He should've been a hard money, high-interest bridge loan until a revenue producing deal was closed. You don't take out such a loan if you don't have something on the horizon to pay it off. Ok, he's the enthusiastic and talented in certain ways cougar in the bar after the woman of your dreams had to bolt because her sister (allegedly) was in a car accident. You might go home with her, but it's not going to be a relationship... not that I have any experience with that kind of shenanigan.

The bolded is simply not so

There is a great deal of skepticism that goes unspoken around here simply because of fan-board etiquette

Those of us who were skeptical of Coombs as more than a recruiter kept our misgivings to ourselves for the most part. A lot of that is admittedly because we weren’t sure… but that’s a big part of the point here. There’s a great deal that a lot of us should be a lot less sure of than we are.

Just because only one side of an argument is vocal does not mean that the other side doesn’t have something to say

Often, the side that is silent has more to go on than the side that is vocal. There are many reasons why they might remain silent. Message board etiquette and uncertainty are just two of them

The following is something that I will mention only as an example of what I’m talking about…

I haven’t seen sufficient proof that Al Washington is a good linebacker coach. I’m not trying to start a conversation here, I won’t defend the statement because my opinion is only that there is not sufficient proof… throw stats at me if you like, throw names at me if you like… I consider none of it dispositive thus far. I’m only pointing out an example of what I’m talking about. A lot of you are eager to try Washington for a role that there is NO evidence that he can do, when there isn’t even enough evidence (to me) that he’s a glowing success at his current job.

Im sure the above is going to be a pretty unpopular opinion with a lot of you. Exactly the kind of thing that I usually keep to myself until there is sufficient evidence to make a definitive statement one way or the other.

There are a lot of things like that, not just for me, but for a lot of people on this board. Don’t assume that everyone agrees just because no one has said otherwise.

One thing no one will doubt is that Kerry Coombs is All-IN for Ohio State football. He bought in a long time ago and gets the kids he recruits to buy in also. As a DB coach he needs to be on the sidelines and let his energy permeate through the team and his players, but as a DC he should be in the box seeing what is going on. You can't do both. Even getting the info relayed by another coach, is not the same as seeing with your own eyes.

Keep him on the sidelines, as a DB coach and recruiter. Keep someone else calling the Defense in the booth that can run the Single High safety and the derivatives that are needed. As much angst as I have for the guy as the DC I don't dislike him a bit but I hate his Defensive calls. Eventually those feelings will be unified and I'd rather it be the positive with him not the DC.

Here's the troubling part to me, the "defensive problems" should have been fixed months ago (see 10 month old article ↓):

Kerry Coombs: Buckeyes must 'fix big plays,' evaluating every option

“There’s constant questions about how we’re doing things — you’re always evaluating what you’re doing and how you’re doing it,” Coombs said before practice on Tuesday. “That’s exactly what we’re doing. Most of the things are execution-based, but we’ve got to make sure we’re doing things that are the best for everybody that’s on the field.

“We have to fix the big plays, there’s no question about that. … Those four plays in particular, those are egregious. So, when you watch those plays, it doesn’t make you feel good. There are so many good things, you know, being ahead 35-7 and being where we’ve been in those situation, there are a lot of really, really good plays. But there’s no question that the focus ends up on those that don’t go well. Those are the ones that have all of our attention and will have it going forward. Those are fixable errors that have to be fixed. That’s my job.”

“I think I have to do everything better,” Coombs said. “Whatever you see on the field is a reflection of what you’ve taught and how you’ve taught it. When any player at any position makes a mistake, as a coach you should take that personally — and I do. Those are things that I have to fix. I have to do a better job.

“I think it’s important and I tell the kids all the time: ‘When we make a mental mistake, that’s my fault. That’s something that I didn’t get coached well enough, taught well enough and that’s my responsibility.’ That’s where we’ve got to see improvement this week.”

That's what I meant by fan excitement to have him back, as a DB coach with several first round picks and an excellent recruiter. I thought he could take the next step as DC, but clearly not. But if he accepts the demotion from DC back to his old role (he should and I think likely will), then I think we should be excited to still have him on the staff in that role. Problem in my eyes is I don't see a viable replacement... we should be looking, but kind of hard to find someone else outside the program right now and I don't see anyone on our defensive staff right now that would be any better. I'm prepared to have to just hope for the best under Coombs the rest of the year, then find our replacement next year.
