DB Shaun Wade (1st Team All American, New England Patriots)

If the season gets shifted to the spring, however, Ohio State will be without its star cornerback.

Both of Shaun Wade's parents – his father, Randy, and mother, Gwen – told First Coast News, a Jacksonville, Florida television station, that their son would sit out the college football season if it eventually gets moved to the spring of 2021 due to concerns about the coronavirus.

"He's outta here, baby," Randy Wade said when posed that hypothetical.

In that case, they said, Wade would spend the time preparing for the NFL rather than covering wide receivers as a Buckeye.

"I want him to be smart," Gwen Wade said, "He could get hurt. Anything could happen. So, why play in the spring? I kind of voiced my opinion to him, talked to him. Pretty much, mama said, 'We're not playing.'"

Ohio State's Gene Smith, appearing on 97.1 on Wednesday, said his fellow Big Ten athletic directors haven't yet discussed the possibility of moving the season to the spring.

If they get to that point, however, the Buckeyes would have to move forward without Wade, who pushed back the start of his NFL career earlier this year in order to return for his redshirt junior season.

Shaun Wade – 70%
If Shaun Wade declared for the 2020 class, he would’ve had a solid shot of being drafted in the first round. — Assuming he didn’t take Arnette’s spot, three first-round corners would’ve been an absurd state for OSU.– Instead, he opted to return to Ohio State in an effort to improve his draft stock. With a good season, Wade has a chance to be a top-10, perhaps even top-5 pick.

Last season, Wade played the majority of his snaps as a slot corner. His size and physicality were critical to allowing Buckeyes nickel and dime packages to succeed against both the pass and the run. Next season, the staff has reportedly promised Wade the ability to play outside to help his draft stock. How he handles that transition to the perimeter will determine if he’s a top-10 guy or a day-two selection.

Wade, however, says he has not given any thoughts to that decision, and he says he does not regret his decision to return to Ohio State.

“I have no second thoughts and no thoughts about opting out,” Wade said. “Just really taking it day by day and trying to enjoy what we have right now. We’ve just gotta listen to the Big Ten and our coaches and go through day by day to see what they’re talking about. We’ve got the best of everything at Ohio State so we’ve been taking it serious. I really haven’t thought about opting out or anything like that, to be honest.”

Like Fields, Wade says his focus has not been on the NFL, instead focusing on his future at Ohio State as he and the rest of the Buckeyes prepare for training camp.

“Really, to be honest, I can’t think about that right now,” Wade said. “Right now, I’ve just gotta focus on camp. Like Justin said earlier, he was talking about the schedule, and we’re looking forward to that. We’re looking forward to playing the team up north and looking forward to playing who we play. But right now, as a team and myself, I’ve just gotta focus on camp. I can’t think about the outside world right now.”

TELECONFERENCE BULLETS: OHIO STATE’S SEVEN TEAM CAPTAINS TALK ABOUT LEADERSHIP, PREPARING FOR AN UNPRECEDENTED SEASON, STAYING SAFE DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

SHAUN WADE
  • Wade said he has “no second thoughts” about choosing to come back to Ohio State for another year. Said he isn't thinking about how the lack of a normal season could affect his chance to improve his NFL draft stock – focused on trying to beat Michigan and win a championship.
  • Wade on whether anyone is standing out to him in Ohio State's secondary during summer workouts: “Everybody, to be honest.” Says he expects this to be a special season and does not expect there to be any fall-off in the secondary.

Current, former Buckeyes stars set to graduate

Ohio State is much more than just an NFL factory. The Buckeyes coaching staff and administrators stress academics and stress earning a college degree. Two current Buckeyes football players will earn their degrees this weekend.

Linebacker Baron Browning and captain Shaun Wade will receive their degrees Sunday afternoon. Browning, a communications major, will be a key part of the Ohio State linebacker room this season. Wade put off the NFL to return to the Buckeyes, and the sport industry major will earn his degree, as well, while becoming a leader of the Ohio State secondary.

SHAUN WADE'S FATHER RANDY PLANNING “PEACEFUL SHOW OF FORCE” AT BIG TEN HEADQUARTERS TO PROTEST CONFERENCE'S DECISION TO SHUT DOWN FOOTBALL SEASON

115885_h.jpg

When Randy Wade saw the petition Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields created Sunday in an effort to convince the Big Ten to reinstate its 2020 football season, Wade decided he needed to find a way to take action himself.

Wade had signed Fields’ petition, which now has over 260,000 signatures. He shared the letter sent to Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren by Football Parents at Ohio State which also called on the conference to reconsider its decision.

But he decided that wasn’t enough.

So on Monday night, Wade booked a flight from his home state to Florida to Chicago, where he’ll arrive on Thursday with plans to lead what he called a “peaceful show of force” outside the Big Ten’s headquarters in Rosemont, Illinois, at 8 a.m. Friday.

“Just talking with my son, talking to Ohio State coaches and the final straw was just Justin Fields and that petition. The fact that he took it upon himself to make a petition, and I’m like as a parent, what can I do?” Wade told Eleven Warriors on Tuesday. “I just thought that no matter how many people signed that petition that the Big Ten might not answer, so if we go up there in some kind of a force, make them speak to us.”

Ideally, Wade is hoping Warren and the Big Ten will start answering questions about last week’s decision before Friday, in which case Wade would call off the protest. But if they continue to remain silent for the next three days, he believes an in-person demonstration can provide the necessary pressure to at least start a conversation with the conference.

“It shows through history. Any time people join together and show concern for something and really have a passion for it, people have to talk, people have to have a reaction to it,” Wade said. “They can’t just pick sides. They have to come out of wherever they’re at and communicate.

“It only takes one person to light a match. And once you get that fire going, they gotta do something. These kids have dreams, and they’ve got goals, and they’re student-athletes, and one part is being taken away from them in a quick moment, and we’ve just gotta fight for it. They came to Ohio State to get an education and to play football. So let’s see if they can play football.”
