LONDON (AP) -- Brian McBride is leaving Premier League club Fulham to return to the United States.
"After much consideration with my family, we have decided to leave Fulham after 4? fantastic years," the veteran striker said in a statement Wednesday on the club's Web site.
"I have always stated my intention to return to America at some stage and this seems like the right moment in my career to move on."
McBride, the only United States player to score in two different World Cups, did not elaborate.
MLS spokesman Will Kuhns said "negotiations are in the preliminary stage" with McBride, who would return to an MLS team through the league's allocation process. The method gives teams priority in reverse order of finish the previous season.
Because the expansion San Jose Earthquakes already have used their allocation this season, Toronto would have the first option to acquire McBride, Kuhns said. He did not give any expectation when McBride would be back in an MLS uniform.
The 35-year-old forward is out of contract and had avoided discussing his future until the end of the season when Fulham narrowly avoided relegation to the League Championship.
"I take great pride in the fact that my last appearance for Fulham saw the club maintain its Premier League status," McBride said. "I leave with some wonderful memories from my time at Fulham and the club will always be in my heart."
McBride scored 40 goals in more than 150 appearances for the Cottagers. He has been at Fulham since January 2004 and also played with Everton and Preston and the Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew.
He dislocated his kneecap in August. Although McBride scored just three more goals after returning to action in February, his ability to hold up the ball, distract defenses and win headers helped galvanize the team.

West Ham, Crew fans trade blows in stands

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
crewbrawl.jpg

Security staffers try to restore order during a brawl in the stands at Columbus Crew Stadium.

From the southeastern corner of Crew Stadium came the West Ham United chants: "East! East! East Lon-don!"

From the northeastern came the answer: "Co-lum-bus! Co-lum-bus!"

Yesterday's war of words turned physical at halftime of the Crew's exhibition match against West Ham, when a handful of West Ham fans ventured into the heart of the Crew's supporters section.

A scuffle broke out and stadium security quickly pulled the West Ham interlopers to the stadium concourse. The next few minutes were frantic.

Soccer hooligans in Columbus?:pirate1:

My favorite part is that some prat will be telling tales in some West Ham pub in which the local hooligans will have knocked out ten thousand Ohioans and then turned back millions of others in their daring exploits. The mind boggles at such idiocy.

Is anyone aware of the fact that the Columbus Crew plays the Chicago Fire tonight in the Eastern Conference Championship game?.......I wasn't aware of it either until the game popped up on my Yahoo home page.

Did anybody know that the Crew had the best regular seasson record in the MLS this past year?..........Didn't know that either.

Sure enough. Coach Sigi Schmid just won Coach of the Year honors, too.

The crew advanced to the second round with a 2-0 margin over KC last Saturday (aggregate victory 3-1 including the game from the previous weekend).

Re: CHICAGO GOAL: Brian McBride in the 29th minute

WTF!

McBride spearheads Fire offense against Columbus

Brian McBride has provided the Fire with a physical presence at forward.

As homecomings go, the looming reunion between Chicago Fire forward Brian McBride and his old team, the Columbus Crew, couldn't be more awkward. For the first eight years of his MLS career, McBride did his utmost to drive the Crew to an MLS Cup, falling in the conference final on four occasions. Yet with another Eastern Conference title at stake on "MLS Primetime Thursday" (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2), it is McBride and his current team, the Fire, who are standing in the Crew's way.
