OL George Fitzpatrick (Official Thread)

I am kindof in the 'sky is falling' category. Having one tackle drafted in the first round since Orlando Pace is pretty ludicrous. The recruiting there needs to be better. I am not against Fitzpatrick per se, he seems like a solid prospect, but Stud needs to start to getting more Zach Rice's and less George Fitzpatrick's.

How many 1st round OTs has Clemson had? I believe its none(actually 1960), and they've done alright. LSU won an NC 2yrs ago, their last 1st round OL was in 1963. Coach Stud has led a team that has won the B1G every year he's been at OSU except 1, won a Cotton Bowl, a Rose Bowl, barely lost a CFP semifinal and then lost in an NC to one of the best teams in CFB history. I'd say that we're doing pretty damn well at OL, and there is an EXTREMELY short list of OL coaches that I'd replace him with.
I'm happy with Fitzpatrick and what he can provide down the line. It's not like we expect him or any OL to start in year 1, or even 2.

Pnuts makes a good point about arm length being important more than height. Michael Jordan seemed way shorter than his data on 247 sports at 6’7”....he sure looked closer to 6’5” when he played. Also Jordan was the #22 OT in his class and I recall him doing a fine if not dominant job as a Buckeye at LT and he’s earning a living currently in the league.

Everyone wants that unicorn-freak LT and I agree. But they are just incredibly rare and you can win a lot of games with really good OTs as well.

Plus I contend that tOSU can always dip into the transfer portal as needed.

I’m just not in the sky-is-falling camp for OT recruiting like some people. Especially considering how good the interior prospects are that are on the roster and potentially coming in.

Fitz looks just fine to me thank you and it may not be accurate to completely call him a project......he’s a guy a lot of good teams want.

This is the top 10 ranked OL in the NFL, the #1 OT is David Bakhtiari who is: 6'4' 299 with 34in arms. By comparison, Jamarco Jones who was mentioned by @ShowMeBuck is 6'4' 299 with 35 1/8 arms. On that list a majority of the OTs are 6'5-6'6, with Bakhtiari being the outlier of height, but having arms of at least 34in in length would be what coaches are looking for. Penei Sewell in the 2021 draft was considered an amazing OT talent and is 6'5 330 with 33 1/4 arms, while the 1st OT taken in 2020 was Andrew Thomas from UGA who is 6'5 315 with 36 1/8 arms.

The length of arms is a major factor, and you're born with that. Add to the height and weight and you can have a great mold to work with. If Mick can add some weight(which has shown he can do with NPF, and rumors are that Zen Michalski has now grown 2in and put on almost 30lbs), and Stud can improve his technique to go with his athleticism from being a TE, than you have a great talent. Sewell was a top ranked OG, and turned into a lottery pick at OT. Bakhtiari was a 2star who went to Colorado got drafted in the 4th round and is now a top NFL OT. What this all says, is that development matters, and I'd go with Stud in that scenario over most in the country.

“I was definitely disappointed to hear the news,” Fitzpatrick said. “Coach Stud and I have a great relationship. I thought he was a good coach. But I’m not going to question coach (Ryan) Day because he knows where the program is going. Just knowing him, I know he’s going to bring in a guy that fits the culture and is a great O-line coach. I’m definitely not worried about a new coach.

“College football is a business. And that’s why I picked Ohio State, it wasn’t for a coach or anything, it was for the culture, community and tradition. That doesn’t change.”
