Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

I'm lowering my expectations to subterranean levels for tonight's game. Expecting to see false starts, bad turnovers, and an inability to run the ball against 8 men in the box on offense. On defense, somewhat better but expect we will see 3rd down conversions galore and stupid face mask and PI penalties. You know, like the Browns. And this Denver team is not good, so that will make the horror even worse. Ugh.
Reverse psychology ftw! :pimp:

It’s also fair to ask whether he’ll (or any player) be the same even if he heals up though. The more hits he takes, the more chances of longer term damage, and even if he’s done for the year, how will he be physically and mentally when he comes back.
Absolutely. Playing with a shoulder that dinged up is risky as hell. Honestly, you have four very winnable games ahead of you (Stillers, @Bungles, @ Corpse of the Patriots and the frickin’ Lions). I’d sit him for as long as I can and let Keenum play out tonight’s script and hope that’s enough to win. If Keenum is absolutely pissing it away, but Baker back in and hope some rest helped.

When you have RBs performing like Chubb, Hunt and Johnson... salute the line.

Johnson was showing some incredible drive last night, but he was also inspiring that extra effort from the trenches.

Case Keenum is horrendous.

Really doesn't speak well to our starting QB then.

Bust on Keenum all you want, but he has 180, a TD, and no TOs…he’s also (mostly) taking the throws that are there. No ones going to confuse him with a starting option, but certain starters could learn something watching.

SIR! That's just "Silly" talk.

I know that you are not a Baker fan but that statement is one of your funnier ones.

I'm genuinely not trying to be a dick on this particular post. But if you want to get at me and have a real, in-depth numbers, X's & O's talk... I'm all for it.

However....

Yes, Baker should absolutely be concerned if Case puts up, at the worst, similar numbers.

Baker 2021 season averages

67% comp
245.66ypg
1td pg
.5 INT pg
8.5 YPA
12.7 Y/C
7.13 NY/A

Case Keenum 2021 season average

61.1% comp
205 ypg
1td pg
0int
5.7 YPA
9.7 Y/C
5.41 NY/A

One game in, and with some pretty shitty weather on a short week, CK has duplicated 85% of what Baker does and did it without a turnover. Yes, I'm well aware they were playing the Broncos and an assortment of
other variables that can and should be factored in. But if Keenum comes out and has a steady game against Pittsburgh then.... shucks.

I'd at least appreciate your acknowledgement that I'm not completely out of my tree and might be spot on. Your acceptance that, while I'm not a "fan" of Baker, I have no ill will towards him would also be cool.
To the contrary, I so very much want him to be a franchise QB. So if we're going to have a conversation about him possibly being one, or the future of the position for the Browns, that's going to require a good bit of honesty.

If Case gives me 85% of what Baker gives me at less than half the cost, then I can't justify spending $25+mil a year on the latter. And THAT, is the primary concern here.

I'm not sold that Baker Mayfield is a true franchise qb... yet. But, the faux qb controversy is some dumb shit. CK can't give this team what Baker can over the course of a season and sure as hell doesn't have future potential; he's proven that over the last several years. What we found during last night's game is that our WR's are playing hurt, or just aren't that good at getting open consistently. If the running game can continue to dominate, it won't matter. If Landry can get healthy, OBJ can get to average, and DPJ can continue to improve, the passing game will be good enough to support the running game; that's all that's really needed. Baker doesn't need to be Brees' level to get a solid contract as a starting QB for this team. But he definitely needs to be healthy and a bit more consistent, which is very feasible and worth investment, given the alternative. If he doesn't, there's no way Keenum leads this team deep into the playoffs.

If the Browns are left to start Keenum the rest of the season, they'd be lucky to even make the playoffs at all.

Gotta hope that shoulder gets cleared by the docs quickly. And this is coming from a fellow Mayfield skeptic. But he gives this team way better of a shot game-to-game than Keenum.
