Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Did Holtmann, the women’s hoop coach, or men’s lacrosse coach really deserve extension’s?

I would submit it was done for recruiting and hopefully with a reduction in the buyouts.

It’s my opinion none of these coaches have a WAR above 0.0

Also received an extension today.

How's this possible? I have seen credible sources here insist that his job is on the line next season.

It is as if the people who said the University doesn't look at coaches like fan boys knew something.

…queue the “we’re a football school” arguments.

Indeed, it truly is ridiculous that Ohio State isn't at least reaching the final four in every sport, every season.

Now if you want to talk about an OSU coach who really should be fired, head on over to the OSU baseball forum.

I'd settle for making it out of the first weekend...once.

Gene must be scrambling to spend money on anything he can latch onto, so there's no money left to build the hockey programs a proper arena.

Nice straw man.

Considering you threw in the women's hoops coach - who won the B1G and reached the Sweet 16 - and the lacrosse coach - OSU was one of only 16 teams to make that sport's tournament - it really wasn't much of a stretch to say what I said.

Good try, though.

Ohio State basketball has won 60% of its games over 120 years. Holtmann wins 65% of his games.

The sooner folks stop looking at Matta's magical 6 year run as the norm - which even he couldn't maintain - the better. Those five-star Duke recruits aren't coming to Ohio State to play in a half empty arena while folks wait for the Spring Game, no matter who is our coach.

You can also thank Thad's predecessors - Jim "probation" O'Brien, Randy "what the hell happened to our basketball program" Ayers, and Gary "how soon can I leave" Williams for making Holtmann's ho-hum win 20+ games, go to the Dance, and not embarrass the University performance so attractive to his bosses.

I am disappointed by this to be perfectly honest unless there is an easy out after this year or next. Anyone who wants to bother looking back through any of the basketball threads can see that I defended CH and stood behind him for a long time. I think he's a great human being and maybe a good coach, but the last 2-3 years has worn that trust and support thin. I don't expect us to be Duke or Kentucky, but I expect a little bit better than what we've got the last few years.

I was all for giving CH at least another year and probably two given the attrition, but this type of contract is a little ridiculous based on the results. We've started having the rails come off good teams and had a legit 2 seed that should have been on a Final 4 run get beat in the first round. I'm sure the excuses will start pouring in, but the results have to get better or CH doesn't deserve that kind of contract. If we're really just a football school who should accept middling results, pay a coach based to that expectation until they actually get us out of that tier. Or pay a known commodity what they're paying CH to get us there.

Happy to have CH back for another chance, I'm just blown away with the terms of the deal based on the results. And frankly, I don't see a way the team is better than middle of the B1G next year with the guys that have left and the misses in the transfer portal. I'll root for CH because I like him as a person and a coach, but this is just a head scratcher.

It’s like you expect a university with our brand and budget to perform better than it’s historical norm in the second most popular college sport. Tread lightly, bud.

It's all about recruiting. You know that. A contract extension now was needed to prove to future recruits he's gonna be here for all 4 years for them. You can't really recruit without a long future contract. You do realize most every college coach who is let go doesn't actually coach all the years on their contract, right? I think CH needs to have a breakthrough season soon, or he's gonna be out after 3 more years regardless of the contract.
