I agree, with better coaching last year, they probably should have been a tournament team.

I wish everyone would quit blaming Matta's bad coaching for last season's performance. I think he coached the hell out of that team but they were just not listening or willing to give the effort. As I said in one of my other posts, I just cannot believe that the entire team would not put forth everything they had with what Thad was going through physically.

From an article on 11 Warriors, it looks like Holtmann would like to bring his entire staff to Ohio State but it looks like one of them might be retained as Butler's HC and if one of those guys does not come it looks like he might bring a guy who coached at Ohio University for about a decade might be one of his assistants.

NCAA rules permit teams three bench assistants and David Woods of the Indianapolis Star is reporting Holtmann intends to bring his entire three-man staff – Terry Johnson, Ryan Pedon and Mike Schrage. Complicating matters is the fact that Butler traditionally likes to hire from within. Each of the Bulldogs' previous five coaches were already on Butler's staff when promoted to the top spot and both Johnson and Pedon are expected to interview for the now vacant position. Naturally, neither coach will pass on the top job at Butler to follow Holtmann to Columbus.

Pedon, a Bexley native, is the staff recruiting ace. He played his college ball at Wooster and coached at Miami, Kent State and Toledo. He knows Ohio prep basketball extremely well and is tight with four-star class of 2018 small forward Jerome Hunter of Pickerington North and four-star class of 2019 point guard Jeremiah Francis. He was also instrumental in landing Massillon's Kyle Young.

Another assistant on Holtmann's staff, Mike Schrage, is not expected to interview for the Butler job and should make the move to Ohio State.

Should Johnson or Pedon earn a promotion, there are another name out there worth keeping an eye on. A source tells Eleven Warriors that Holtmann really likes Aaron Fuss, who joined the staff at Tennessee-Chattanooga two weeks ago. Fuss was an Ohio State student manager, before spending nearly a decade in Athens where he started as the director of basketball operations and an assistant coach for Ohio University.

While with the Bobcats, Fuss was responsible for recruiting Central Ohio, pulling Rodney Culver, Doug Taylor, Jordan Daris and Jason Carter, who could play for Ohio State right now, in the last two years, alone.

I actually never saw a "lack of effort" from the team last year, JaQuan Lyle included. The problem wasn't lack of effort, it was cohesion and direction. Admittedly, I didn't watch the last few games....

I guess but what are you going to do if they do not put forth the effort. I guess the point that I was trying to make is if you saw a coach, who you played for, in a great deal of pain wouldn't you put forth a little more effort.

You sit Amir Williams on the bench and work his ass off in practice until he either gives consistency of focus, effort, and energy or quits the team. You don't accept half-assing it because then it goes viral and infects Loving who passes it on to Lyle and so on until it's a systemic problem.

Yeah even Loving who was notorious for looking like he didn't show up seemed to try most games last year. I also never got the lack of effort thing about Lyle. His problem was always he seemed to predetermine whether he was going to pass or shoot on any given play which lead to a lot of ugly plays over the course of the season where they took away and he tried to force it anyway. Also he had trouble balancing scoring and passing for most of the games of his career. He had games where he'd score and not pass or pass and not score. There were a few great games where he did both but he seemed to have trouble finding that balance.

I have to disagree. If you watched Williams and saw effort then we were watching different games. Amir Willliams defined "lack of effort".

Agreed. I saw plenty of "lack of effort". It wasn't every game for JaQuan but that Rutgers game in the Big Ten Tournament stuck out as a complete lack of effort/care.

I would plenty happy with an assistant staff of Schrage, one of Terry Johnson or Ryan Pedon, and Jent or Fuss.

Butler's two other assistant coaches last season were Terry Johnson and Ryan Pedon. Pedon was the staff's recruiting expert and is a Columbus native. According to the Star, both interviewed for the job Friday. Other reported candidates for the Butler head coaching job are UW–Milwaukee's LaVall Jordan and Micah Shrewsberry, an assistant with the Boston Celtics.

Don't know anything about Johnson or Pedon: however, Pedon looks like he would be a "good fit" here in Columbus.

I listened to a iTunes podcast and one of the writers on Land Grant said that he noticed that Greg Paulus was followed by Holtmann and thought that either Paulus or Jent might be retained by CH. I do not think that CJ will be retained but I guess Paulus is a possibility.

I just hope that Chris Holtmann holds his assistant coaches accountable. Loyalty is one thing, but lack of production/development that has an adverse effect on the program is something entirely different.

Holtmann needs to also take a look at the strength and conditioning program.
