Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Saw Coach's post game... he was fighting it back... being very gracious but he was pissed... you could tell what he really wanted to say but was very PC...

As the saying goes.. "it's not the Xs and the Os.. it's the Jimmys and the Joes"

You can't make the shots for them... you can't coach them out of stupid turnovers...
Falls on the sword by saying he should have taken steps to calm them... aka they choked

If next season is similar, what does Gene think?

At this point it's hard to have a reasonable negative or positive opinion about Holtmann. Every season has been such a combination of highs and lows--if we struggle on D we are good on O and vice versa, if we win big one month we will lose a lot the next, if we have a big lead we will find a way to lose it, if we play a good opponent or mediocre opponent we will play at whatever level makes the game close--that all kind of washes out into a sea of 2nd tier conference finishes and no S16s.

But unless Gene is able to get the kind of money that OSU typically reserves for football coaches, I don't see who OSU could get that would be a guaranteed upgrade over Holtmann's results. It would have to be a gamble.
Barring a total implosion or some kind of scandal, I don't see him in any kind of jeopardy next season. He's won 20 games each year, has made the tournament each year (would have made it last year), and has run a clean program. If they stumble next season and miss the NCAAs, I could see his seat warming a bit in 2022...maybe. But, even if they do decide to move on, like you said, it's a gamble.

The fact is, outside of a bit of an anomaly from 2006-2013(ish), tOSU Basketball has typically been a good, not great program. Which is what they are right now.

Then what purpose does he serve? Honestly. Is it not the coach's responsibility to have his team play smart, disciplined, and composed basketball? Our play in the final 2 minutes of games was pretty much a disaster all year. That falls on him. I've mostly been a really big fan of him but he deserves some heat for that loss. It should be unacceptable by our standards

Why settle for that when it's been demonstrated before that tOSU basketball can be great? I'm not saying fire Holtmann. I just disagree with this prevailing "aw shucks, we'll get em next time" sentiment on this board. It was a mostly excellent regular season. But it's fair to acknowledge the lack of tourney success and expect better

I don't totally disagree. I'm just cautioning against the expectation that replacing Holtmann = an automatic upgrade. I think a lot of the fanbase came onboard during Matta's best years and expect that. The fact is, that was the best run in program history, and outside of that 6-7 year period, a couple of years in the early-60s, and a couple of years in the early-90s, tOSU basketball has typically been a good, not great program. I do agree that Holtmann needs to do better and next year will be critical.

Yes that’s fair.....if you also acknowledge Holt went to OT and almost won the Conf tourney and eventually beat every good Conf opponent even though they were picked 7th in the conference.

So, as long as the criticism about the disappointments are balanced with being pleased with exceeding expectations.

Holt can be seen as the victim of his own success. People expect greatness even though perhaps he has had teams playing above their heads and isn’t that a good thing and a sign of good coaching?

I’m absolutely in the camp of being patient and realizing you can fire a coach and get worse. And there are many, many examples of that in college sports.

big difference in almost winning a conference tournament and almost winning the NCAA tournament or even winning your conference tournament compared to winning the NCAA tournament

I’m just saying this team exceeded almost every preseason expectation and that should be balanced against falling short of the post season expectations

Judging from a lot of the idiocy in this fanbase (it's really the fringe, but they're loud) on social media concerning Holtmann's job security, there is a sense of unwarranted entitlement creeping into the basketball side of the fanbase.

I have zero idea why but I think the stupidity from 001/002/waswrong/whatever his alias is now illustrates it.
