In his first season on the Butler sidelines, the team posted a 25-9 record, a second-place finish in the BIG EAST, and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2011. The BIG EAST finish was Butler's best since joining the conference prior to the 2013-14 season.

Schrage plays a large role in all facets of the program. Butler's recruiting class that will arrive on campus in advance of the 2017-18 season is the highest-ranked class in program history.

Schrage was part of the Stanford staff under coach Johnny Dawkins for eight seasons prior to arriving at Butler. He was responsible for coaching and scouting, in addition to serving as the team's recruiting coordinator. The Cardinal signed 16 players ranked in the Top 100 nationally during his time on the Stanford staff. Schrage mentored standout Chasson Randle, the 2011 Mr. Basketball from Illinois who finished his career as Stanford’s all-time scoring leader while becoming the program’s first Academic All-America First Team selection since 2006. Four Cardinal players were selected in the NBA Draft following their collegiate careers.


The Cardinal made five postseason appearances in Schrage’s eight seasons in Palo Alto, including an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2014. The Cardinal also won two NIT Championships during his tenure (2012, 2015). Stanford won at least 20 games four times during that stretch, which is a significant accomplishment as Stanford’s strength of schedule was rated in the top 50 each of the past four seasons, including twice in the top 20.

During his tenure at Duke, Schrage was a member of Duke's 2001 national championship squad and two NCAA Final Four teams. He served as the program's director of basketball operations from 2002-08. Schrage also served as the program's academic and recruiting coordinator from 1999-2002, his first three years at Duke.

chrage was a four-year student manager at Indiana from 1994-98 under Bob Knight and coached and coordinated camps during the summers. In 1996, he worked with the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team as a member of its support staff.

Seems he's been consistent in getting his teams to improve on FTs

Even going back to his Gardner-Webb Days there was an improvement every season.

His first season - 64.2
2nd season - 66.8
3rd season - 71.5

Chris Holtmann seems to understand this. His personal account has a modest eight thousand followers, but during basketball season is frequently updated with pictures and video of both the team and his personal life. It's a smart way to market himself to potential Butler recruits that may not know as much about Holtmann as they might about Bill Self or John Calipari (for his part, Coach Cal has over 1.7 million followers on Twitter himself).

...will be HUGE going forward. In today's world, I was always baffled by the lack of a social media presence by the tOSU hoops staff. Especially given the success the football program has had.

I suspect that "modest" 8000 followers is about to balloon considerably.

I posted this a few months ago but up until about a year ago poor Thad had no idea what twitter really was. He could not understand what people were telling him about the tweets that they were getting when his picture of him in the Ohio State basketball uuniform was posted about a year ago. His daughter had to explain what was going on. That is probably one of the major reasons why Ohio State's basketball presence on social media has been lacking for some time. They had just tired some part-time guys to help out in that area. Sounds like our new coach might not need any help.

I'm hoping he resembles a healthy seasons' Thad Matta. What coach has done for this program can't really be explained at the moment and I hope Holtmann brings in the work ethic and energy Thad had when he was healthy. The players in the state will get us back if they are coached up and I wouldn't put it past Holtmann to have us middle of the BiG pack this season.

I mean think about it, about 6 shots kept the Buckeyes from having a pretty decent record this season with the train wreck we had on the court. 6 freaking shots. I'm flipping optimistic folks.
