Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Well, whether fans like it or not we’re gonna have Holtmann at least until next year. The spiral to this season has me really soured but I do know there is big time talent on the horizon. Next year is it for me, but it’s not my choice anyway.

At some point Chris is just going to have to change. Something. Anything. It can be done. If he’s going to coach here than he has to get better.

Maybe after this year of getting beat down, he can build up something better. Coach K was 62-57 his first four seasons at Duke.

Not say he’s a future K, but this will be the worst season he’s had since his first 2 at Gardner Webb. Heck, even Chris Collins at NU is putting together a good year.

It has to be a wake up call.

Yeah, anybody thinking Holtmann is getting fired this year is gonna be bitterly disappointed. But, he should be firmly entrenched on the hot seat next year. My concern is that his "bounce back threshold" is another 21-12 type season and a first weekend tournament exit. If that saves his job, Gene's fine with "slightly better than average" and we're just gonna have to deal with it.

#FireHoltmann is trending on Twitter. You don't give a coach a $20 million extension then fire him six months later. Just not gonna happen.

He'll get at least another year.
Just awful timing on that extension. Of course it's hard to see an implosion like this coming. I've been pretty bullish on Holtmann being able to get things cooking here, but I've lost all faith after this dingleberry of a season. Maybe he proves me wrong, but I ain't holding my breath. I think we've already seen his ceiling.

The Board approved extensions for Holtmann, Day, and McGuff on the same day. Imagine if Day had gone 6-6 this season.

Basketball will always play second fiddle at OSU, but this team appears headed to a losing season. That's unacceptable.

I have typically watched every game of the year that is televised even if the team is not very good and usually have to record them. Now I just record it and look at the score, then pass if it is a loss. I am 34 and this is the worst performing team I can remember watching in terms of potential versus actual production.

Not sure how big of a decline in viewership is in assessing the finances of terminating CH, but I would have to think viewership took a massive decline this season....I know the views are nowhere in the stratosphere of football for any given basketball season, but I would have to imagine it has some significance (in addition to actual results) even if not much.

Regardless, looks like we are in for one more season of CH at least. Now we might need to turn our frustrations to Gene Smith, who says CH is "the coach of our future" without qualification...if we turn around and have a similar season after this spectacular recruiting class joins our current freshmen class, he still has a job? Hell no, not ok with that. My biggest worry as someone mentioned above is that we'll have a record that gets us into the Tourney and maybe we win one game, then CH stays. If we make a Sweet 16 run or deeper, than fine on keeping him. If not and we keep him, that signals acceptance of mediocrity.

Also, I heard CH got a technical last game and ejected for berating the officials? Might not be a popular opinion but I am ok with it...at least shows he gives a shit.

I'm wondering how many of the current class stays, and how many of the 2023 class reconsider their commitments.

We have seen Holtmann's ceiling and it ain't that great. If we return to that next season and keeps his job, I'm guessing Gene is okay with a "meh" basketball program and we're gonna have to deal with it.

They told us that when they gave him the extension - win 20, go dancing, maybe win a game, & stay out of trouble.

It seems they're more concerned with not revisiting the Ayers and O'Brien days than trying to relive the Matta days.

I know one thing I would do if I were him. I wouldn't redshirt another player unless it was medical. Whats the point? If you are going to recruit good players which he seems to be doing now, don't redshirt em because they aren't staying four years anyway unless they're Zed Key or similar who doesn't have an NBA relatable game. Sure as shit could use that sharpshooter sitting on the bench these last 10 games regardless if he's too small to guard in the B1G. Either don't recruit em or dont redshirt em and see if they cant get better on the courts especially if you've got a whole group of masons out there.

I don't think the Matta days are repeatable for this program given the current climate and lack of home grown talent in the greater Columbus vicinity...Between NIL, 1 and dones, the AAU circuit and all the other stuff you have to deal with, it seems like there is a want to stay semi-competitive but not compromise the program for trying to over-extend whatever theoretical reach they think they have...

Just my .02 - people say his 20ish wins/early tourneys, etc are a failure. Historically they aren't (More or less on par) and if he's staying out of trouble with the NCAA, my guess is those "failures" are right in line with the goals of his employment contract.

It's why I find the whole "fire Holtmann" thing to be kinda odd - no AD is going to fire a coach for 1 bad year if he's meeting his goals (assuming those are his goals and I believe they are)....

I said something similar back in March and didn't phrase it well this time. I also think the Matta days were an outlier - our basketball history says as much - and the Board's priorities are not the same as fans' priorities. Run a clean program, win 20ish games, go to the tourney, win a game or two, and be a good ambassador for the University and you will keep this job for years.

But this season needs to be an anomaly. He'll certainly get a chance to turn things around no matter how many fans tweet #FireHoltmann.

Goodman still carrying his water. Which, pardon me but I simply do not want to hear. And it just makes me angrier.

What a low bar.

And I’m past the “careful what I wish for” fear. What we have now is grim and not fun as an OSU basketball fan. I am wishing for a lot more than Holtmann right now and I’m positive anyone else could provide it. What are we gonna do? Find a guy worse than 1-9? And these Big Ten teams aren’t good. Don’t fool yourselves.

Anyway, end of rant. I know nothing is changing in the next 12 months. I just don’t need to hear how OSU fans should be grateful for Holtmann right now. Loser talk.

Just do better, coach.
