Chicago Bulls (6x NBA Champions)

Why not, they seem to be just as competitive, if not more so without him... why not trade him for draft picks or something, I know you wont get 1:1 value for him.

Because you never, ever, ever trade one of the 15 best players in the league unless his contract is expiring and you absolutely positively 100% know you can't resign him, or you're getting back one of the 15 best players in the league in return.

Also, what piece would be more valuable to the Bulls roster right now than a franchise point guard? Nate is playing out of his mind right now, but he's still a player best suited for a 20mpg role as instant offense off the bench because he doesn't really fit Chicago's style defensively, which is their identity.

Personally, I think Nate is the premier candidate to get drastically overpaid in FA this year based on his playoff heroics, and Reinsdorf is too cheap and Forman too smart to be the one to do it.

Me and a friend were discussing today what you do with the Bulls going forward. Their current roster:

Rose - PG
Deng - SF
Butler - SG/SF
Noah - C
Gibson - PF
Hinrich - PG
Marquise Teague - PG
Malcolm Thomas - PF/C
Boozer - PF
Nate - PG
Belinelli - SG/SF
Daequan - SG
Rip Hamilton - SG
Nazr Mohammed - C
Radmanovich - SF/PF

The bolded are all UFA this season, and account for about $11M in cap space. A number of people think they may amnesty Boozer this offseason if Reinsdorf is willing to pay it, which I think is a good move. Boozer makes $15M next year, so total you'd have $26M in cap space. Based on my WAGs as to next contract salaries, here's who I would consider signing if I were the Bulls:

Millsap - $11M
Belinelli - $4M
Matt Barnes- $4M
Dalembert - $4M
Veteran Min PF or combo PG/SG - $1M
Rookie - $1M
Rookie - $1M

That would leave you with a starting five of:

PG - Rose
SG - Butler
SF - Deng
PF - Millsap
C - Noah

Bench five:

PG - Hinrich
SG - Belinelli
SF - Barnes
PF - Gibson
C - Dalembert

With a vet min, Teague, Thomas, and two rookies rounding out your bench. Saw a mock with them taking Brandon Paul today, who I think is perfect for what this roster would lack (volume bench scorer).

That team is stupid, stupid, stupid good defensively. You've got 3 elite wing stoppers in Butler, Deng, and Barnes and 3 great defensive big men in Noah, Gibson, and Dalembert, with Millsap being an upgrade defensively on Boozer. They should be better offensively than this year's squad just from Rose's return and Butler's maturation, although they will miss Nate's shot creation ability on the second unit. But I think they could definitely beat the Heat, no question.

This whole Derrick Rose saga is why the NHL is better than the NBA.

in the NHL, you wouldn't have your team captain missing the playoffs when his team is drastically outmatched when a surgically repaired knee. there have been a few NHL players who have played in the playoffs with still-torn ACLs, just because it's the playoffs.

Derrick Rose is a great player, but he's a giant vagina.

The problem is in evaluating the tests on his ACL. Nobody quite knows what to make of a test that D-Flower actually took himself.

Seriously, the guy is a fucking chump. Rumor is that he's going to take his money (the entire fucking contract is guaranteed) and never play again. The Bulls will be fucked in the ass like a stranger for a decade.

GO HAWKS.

Truth. The dude's straight hanging his team out to dry, likely because he realizes the Bulls will likely lose with or without him, and he thinks not playing (and hence not losing to the Heat again in the playoffs) won't tarnish his reputation. The guy lacks heart and is a total prima donna. He had one good season and is trying to make a career out of it. I dislike Joakim Noah as much as anyone, but he has 10 times the heart that Rose ever will.

Rose should feel like the world's biggest douche considering he's sitting on the bench in street clothes while a guy like Iman Shumpert, who tore his ACL on the same day as Rose last season, is down the road throwing down windmill put back dunks on people already.

Rose represents all that's wrong with today's NBA--it's all about players trying to protect their own image and brand. Rose evidently thinks it'll harm his reputation if he comes back and the Bulls lose. Ergo, he chooses to abandon his team and watch them get railroaded from his cushy seat on the bench.

Chicago put forth zero effort tonight.

That's not really fair...they're starting a guy in Nate Robison that was literally the 10th guy on OKC's bench, and the 9th guy in Boston. They're also leaning heavily on Belenelli who averaged 15 minutes a game in the regular season.

Chicago is completely depeleted in the backcourt and it is showing the deeper into the playoffs they get. The fact that Chicago stole a game in Miami while giving guys like DaQuan Cook, Marcus Teague, and Nazr Mohammad minutes on top of Nate Robison playing nearly the whole game is remarkable.

But what Chicago was doing was not sustainable at all. When you're missing Kirk Hinrich, Luol Deng, and Derrick Rose....your chances aren't very good against a very good (and protected) Miami team.

I completely disagree. The way you re-injure yourself with an injury like this is when you play tentative because you're not entirely confident in the muscle/ligaments, and his playing style just exacerbates that issue. If Rose isn't confident, it's in both his and Chicago's best interest for him to not come back. You're playing for the rest of his career, not these playoffs. Also, how in the world does it hurt Rose's brand to lose to the Heat even if he's completely healthy, much less coming off a major knee injury like this?

Chicago wasn't winning this series with a fully healthy and in game shape Rose, and considering he's a couple months of playing away from in game shape he isn't making a major difference in this series. But smart moves in free agency and a fully healthy and confident Rose next season, and they could challenge Miami. That's what I'm playing for if I'm Gar Forman.
