CFB Day Night Doubleheader

Team tackling 2 games in 1 day
By Thomas O'Toole, USA TODAY
Northwestern College (Minn.) will play a rare, if not unprecedented, day-night football doubleheader Oct. 8. But athletics director Matt Hill and coach Kirk Talley want to be clear: By scheduling two games in one day, they are simply dealing with logistical and scheduling issues, not trying to prove anything.
"We are not trying to embarrass any schools," Hill says. "We're just trying to get 10 games in."

It's nonetheless quite a novelty. Northwestern, moving from NAIA to NCAA Division III after next season, will play Trinity Bible (N.D.) at home in St. Paul at 1 p.m. CT and then drive about 5 miles to play Macalester, also in St. Paul, at 7 CT. Hill says a call to the NCAA and other research produced nothing similar, at least in modern football. The NCAA also told him there's no rule against it.

"They are very adventurous," says Trinity athletics director Tim Grant, who adds he appreciates Northwestern's sensitivity. Northwestern won last year's game 41-0. "If they have the ability to do that, that's great. We're fine with it."

Hill says the games came about because scheduling issues within the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference made it difficult to find a late-season contest. Macalester had an opening that coincided with the previously scheduled Trinity game.

"We started brainstorming with our coaches and somebody, I don't remember who, suggested we play the two games," Hill says.

Talley says he consulted his seniors first and the reaction ranged from "Are you kidding me?" to one player being "concerned about showing up the other schools, which I appreciated."

Talley says issues such as "warm-ups, cool-downs, prepping for the games in regard to watching films throughout the week" will have to be addressed. Northwestern has a game the previous weekend.

I think I'd have an issue reconciling the potential increased injury risk (Fatigue) to my players whether I thought I could win both games or not...

Well- If they're moving to D-III, at least its not a recruiting publicity stunt.

It looks like their first game isn't much of an opponent, so you'd try to play the second and third teams as much as possible to keep your starters fresh for game two. If they've got enough roster depth, they can pull it off.

Obviousy that's the plan... but on the other hand... if I'm the first team they play, I'm extremely motivated to do everything possible to keep that from happening...
