CB Sevyn Banks (transfer to LSU)

CB Cameron Brown, CB Sevyn Banks

As Damon Arnette and Jeff Okudah both leave Columbus and head to the NFL, Ohio State will have two new cornerbacks when it opens the season in September. Shaun Wade will be the headliner of the secondary for the Buckeyes as the only starter returning to a dominant defense from last season. Cameron Brown became the third outside cornerback for the Buckeyes as the season went on and made plays in his little playing time against Ohio State’s best opponents. Sevyn Banks found the field sparingly when the Buckeyes had a lead, but he got his hands on the ball with an interception. Both will have to see expanded roles next season as Ohio State excepts to continue excellence in the secondary that dominated so many teams last year.

CB Sevyn Banks
The secondary came into the spring as perhaps the unit facing the most uncertainty at Ohio State, and having Shaun Wade and Cameron Brown limited for the first workout only intensified the spotlight on the defensive backs actually on the field. Several guys made impressive plays on Monday, and there were a handful of interceptions nabbed by the unit — but Sevyn Banks dominated most of the attention thanks to his prominent role with the current first-team group and the way he’s developed physically. Ohio State needs two cornerbacks to step up and fill out the rotation alongside Wade, and Banks left little doubt that he intends to be one of them.

In a format that heavily favors the pass, the spotlight tends to focus on the wide receivers and the secondary. Even if Ohio State is skewing younger on the offensive side, there’s really not much doubt that unit is going to be one of the best in the country — while the defensive backs have been the group facing the most uncertainty and questions. Sevyn Banks was going to have a chance to ease some of those fears as he wrapped up camp and potentially locked up a starting spot for the Buckeyes at cornerback in the exhibition. The return of Kerry Coombs ensures that at least three guys will rotate at that spot, and it’s hard to envision at this point that Banks wouldn’t be one of them.
