Calling all lawyers/law students...

Does anyone want to take my property final on Thursday?

It's my last final of my first semester and as evidenced by my large amount of posts today, studying/outlining is pretty much the last thing in the world I want to do right now.

Necro bump Script style.

Serious Q: How soon do docs appear on LexisNexis? Trying to find information about a scumbag (OVI) that caused a head on collision with my step brother.

Step brother in therapy, shattered hip, leg, etc ... He and my step mother aren't getting anything through police, and he's in no condition to meet with attorneys yet.

Mostly step mother wondering if we can find anything on the guy. Google fu has gotten me nowhere.

Don't know how long it takes for a document to appear on Nexis, but the local jurisdiction that took the accident report should not withhold a copy of it - it's a public record and anyone is entitled to get a copy of it. If charges have been filed, the clerk of court for the jurisdiction in which the case is filed should also provide copies to anyone who asks for them, as they too are public record. Often, at least in the bigger counties, these documents can be found on-line. Agencies are entitled to a fee for providing copies, usually something like 5 cents a page.

In what class do they teach you that if I take you out for a nice seafood dinner, you bill me 2k for the pleasure of your company?

Dear lord, we take clients out to complimentary dinners all the time. We track the time but just to show we zeroed it out as a client appreciation.

At least you were there to eat the meal. A few years ago a friend’s husband died. Husband’s attorney billed his estate for attending the guy’s funeral!

That's pretty bad. Nearly as bad as the attorney in Minnesota who was having sex with his divorcee client and was billing her for the time they were having sex.

So, it turns out this is possibly relevant in a situation I have from an accident a while back. The attorney I had (and then dismissed) never found out insurance information for the person who hit me. I have a decision to make quite soon about whether I'm using another attorney or not, and would love to know the driving history of the person who nailed me, and also if there's a way to find out if/or who her insurance co. was.

Any suggestions about quickie ways to find these things out?

Basically, I'm having to decide if it's worth my paying the filing fee to stall around while someone else looks into the case.

I'll reply with what I know if someone more knowledgeable doesn't reply sooner than say. . . 12 hours.

May I assume you did not file a police report?

May I assume you did not file a police report?

Oh, yeah. For whatever reason, the cop who came out would never do the report himself, so I did file one. (Very annoying, since he spoke to both the witnesses who kindly waited around for probably more than an hour for him to show up.) He did give me his card, with a "report number" but he didn't want to write it up himself.

My thought was if I could access her driving history, I'd know whether she has a record of causing accidents, driving uninsured, etc. that would clarify whether she's likely to have more than Safe Auto-level minimal insurance.

PS I did try calling records yesterday, and they transferred me to another department where--of course--I got an answering machine instead of a person.
