Yeah, I’ll be interested to see what happens. People automatically assume that higher ranked classes mean even better results, but his past success has been built on teams with a mix of mid-tier players that fully bought in to his philosophy and highly ranked guys. Does everyone still buy in when those “program guys” aren’t around?

This is a very good point. Sometimes dynasty teams begin to "over recruit" by bringing in players with star power and not much else, mercenaries with no loyalty to the program, guys with issues (character, effort, attitude), guys who rely on talent alone and ignore coaching. Top recruits go to a successful program because it's successful, they think associating with greatness equals greatness, they don't buy in, and the dynasty eventually collapses because five-star recruits are having three-star careers. This happened to Florida State at the end of their historic run, to Southern Cal after Pete Carroll left, and it might be happening to Alabama right now. If you want to see how just one "over starred" recruiting class can kill a program, look at Miami's Class of 2004.

Regarding Clemson: Ohio State is going to have to beat some powerhouse teams to win a national championship, so Clemson might as well be one of them.

All great points, except for Free shoes, the rumor is that Jimbo nailed it in, the last 2yrs he was there. And Pete and his personality helped USC immensely, if no sanctions and he remained, I think he would run Saban. Much more to sell in LA than in Tuscaloosa, and they weren't afraid to play teams anywhere in the country.
But I fully agree that Bama is the main example of what's been mentioned. They've gotten so good and recruited so many highly rated players that they arent all buying in, and are essentially mercenaries before the NFL. They're starting to have a good amount of 5star misses, but who am I kidding they'll probably still win the sEC in 2020

Just a comment on turning 5* into 3*'s......have always thought that Notre Dame had the record of recruiting the 'best', and turning them into mediocre players......mayhaps it's because when I was 'younger', ND would go into a state (Ohio for instance), and say, you're the best RB, DT, etc so we'll take you.....and up they went to ND. H&G might remember the Cincy pipeline to ND, wanna say St. X, but time has clouded my brain....anyway, teams like MSU, Wiscy, Iowa, etc taking 2 & 3*, and turning them into first rounders is probably the way to go. Go Bucks!

Edit: But sincerely agree that taking a 5* (mercenary type seems a tad harsh), that has no idea/love/caring about tOSU isn't always a recipe for failure, as long as they can be a 'team player', and blend into the (buy into) the concepts. Also believe that one of the first things I hear from the players is about the 'brotherhood'. That's more important.....Happy Sunday.
