I was a fan in the student section of Cliff Keen Arena at the UM-OSU volleyball game in Ann Arbor tonight. While OSU beat us handily, the Buckeye fans crossed the line on several occasions, physically violating Michigan fans and just generally being disgusting. Here's the highlight reel:
After sitting in our student section, a fan/parent stood at the boundary set determined by the athletic department and shoved her way over, refusing to move until the entire student section scooted over six inches.
Some of our fans had small plastic cones - handed out at a previous volleyball game - through which they were yelling. A woman clad in her red and silver trotted over, ripped it out of a student's hand and ran her tongue around the rim. It broke when he threw it away, and upon retrieving it, she pressed its jagged edge to his face.
Two UM fans started an irritating charade where they pretended to walk back and forth, very slowly, in front of the OSU fans, deciding whether or not they wanted a hot dog. A woman crouching in the first row grabbed one of them by the shirt and pulled him to the floor.
Later, a student hung by the railing and pulled himself along in front of the OSU fans, yelling about how he was getting a hot dog and this is the only way to do it. The same woman from before bent down and licked his hands while he was suspended. As it turns out, she was libero Rebecca Kastein's mother.
If any of this had happened to me, I would've had the offenders removed. One incident is basically assault, while another is just foul.
I completely understand the intensity of the rivalry between Michigan and OSU. To some extent I expect and appreciate some jarring back and forth. Especially between the competing teams. But between the students and the players' moms?
I accept that there are bad apples in every bunch. But this happens almost everywhere I go for a UM/OSU matchup. For once I'd like to see OSU fans step up, take responsibility, be humane and have respect. Tonight was just embarrassing.
