Bret Bielema (HC Illinois)

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...f-including-former-patriots-coach-per-report/

On Tuesday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Giants are hiring former New England Patriots' defensive line coach Bret Bielema for a spot on Judge's staff. They are still finalizing details on what role he will play, but Bielema brings personality and experience to the Giants.

Bielema was hired by the Patriots in 2018 as a defensive consultant to Bill Belichick. After New England won Super Bowl LIII, Bielema was promoted to defensive line coach. Prior to his stint with the Patriots, Bielema served as Arkansas' head coach for five seasons and seven seasons as the head coach at Wisconsin. During his time in Madison, Bielema was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2006, and he made three consecutive Rose Bowls.

Bret Bielema sues Arkansas' Razorback Foundation for $7 million for allegedly reneging on buyout agreement

Now entering his second season as an NFL position coach, former Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema is getting litigious against his former employer.

The current outside linebackers coach for the New York Giants filed a lawsuit against Arkansas’ Razorback Foundation on Friday demanding $7,025,000 in payment for an alleged breach of Bielema’s buyout agreement, per Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel.

Bielema was fired by Arkansas in the minutes immediately following the end of a 4-8 season in 2017. The coach and school eventually agreed to a reported $12 million buyout agreement, to be paid in monthly installments of $320,833.33 per month through December 2020.

I was curious about his recruiting so I looked up his yearly class rankings.

Wisconsin
2006: 36
2007: 32
2008: 37
2009: 42
2010: 46
2011: 44
2012: 65

Arkansas
2013: 23
2014: 29
2015: 22
2016: 23
2017: 27

That feels to me like a recruiting service southern bias bumping up his classes at Arkansas, but otherwise he just keeps a program where it is recruiting-wise.

I’m highly skeptical he can build anything from nothing at Illinois even with the potential the program has to be more than terrible.

I don’t think his personality and charisma are going to get him to where they need to be on the recruiting trail... but who knows, maybe he’ll make some good hires for his staff.
