Big XII (official thread of whining, and homely herpes-having’ hos)

Big 12 warns of losing 50% of TV value following UT/OU exit

The Big 12 Conference could see the value of its television deal cut in half once Texas and Oklahoma bolt for the Southeastern Conference, Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Monday at a hearing of Texas lawmakers.

A committee of Texas senators heard testimony from university leaders at Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech on the monetary and academic losses that conference realignment would mean for the Big 12 and its members once Texas and Oklahoma leave for the SEC in 2025.

University of Texas at Austin President Jay Hartzell testified that the path to making the switch became clear “into the summer,” and that UT told Bowlsby that in a call following news of the move. Hartzell said the school would "continue to honor all agreements.”

“Up until the moment you hit send on the decision, you are always thinking, ‘Is this the right thing for the University of Texas at Austin?’” Hartzell said.

Bowlsby has been highly critical of both Texas and Oklahoma, accusing them of plotting for months to leave the 10-member league for the powerful SEC. He also accused ESPN of working behind the scenes to gut the Big 12, even sending a cease-and-desist letter that the cable giant refuted, but backed off that stance Monday: “We have agreed to not escalate this publicly. It’s in neither party’s best interest to do so.”

Of far more interest to the Texas lawmakers was the future of the Big 12 without the Sooners and Longhorns.

"Fewer power-five football programs in Texas is a very negative reality with this situation," Texas Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt said.

Bowlsby said the TV contract value would take a 50% hit.

The Big 12 distributed $345 million to its 10 members this year ($34.5 million apiece), down from the previous year because of the pandemic. Most of that revenue comes from the Big 12′s TV deals, including ESPN. The SEC is positioned to distribute as much as $70 million annually to its members in coming years.

Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec and Hocutt estimated the two schools' departure could mean a hit of $30 million to Tech's athletic budget, which is projected at $93.4 million this coming year.

Hocutt said all sorts of revenue streams would be affected.

When asked specifically about Tech's contract with apparel supplier Under Armour and sponsorship money, Hocutt said, "That is the other incremental revenue that we would be in jeopardy by not staying at the power-five level. Our Under Armour agreement, apparel agreement, sponsorships, licensing revenue, ticket sales are all auxiliary revenues that would be affected."

Now it's the AAC that the Big XII is being victimized by

American commissioner Mike Aresco denies any collusion to add Big 12 teams

American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco denied allegations that his conference and ESPN had "strategically aligned or plotted to influence conference structures," adding that any suggestion otherwise was "a completely unfounded and grossly irresponsible accusation."

Last week, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby suggested that ESPN and an unnamed conference had gone after several remaining Big 12 teams and told CBS Sports the American had pursued three to five teams from his conference. Aresco vehemently fired back at that assertion Wednesday.

"Our conference has never strategically aligned or plotted with ESPN to influence conference structures," Aresco said during a virtual media day event. "We wouldn't do that, ESPN has never done that and would not do it. We do consult with our television and business partners on issues related to our conference; everyone does. But any suggestions or statements that we colluded with ESPN with regard to the structure of any other conference is a completely unfounded and grossly irresponsible accusation, and that's all I really have to say about this at this point."

The Big East missed their opportunity (if they ever even had one) to poach Big 12 teams when things were falling apart back in 2010. I'm not sure why any of the remaining B12 teams would accept an invitation from the AAC even without Oklahoma.*

*Everyone is secretly glad to see Texas go, even if they will miss the money.

If anything the Big XII will poach the AAC. The Big XII still has solid path to the New Years 6.

I think if the Remaining 8 can't work something out with the PAC, they'll probably invite four from the group of Cincinnati, Houston, South Florida, Memphis, and Colorado State to join.

Memphis only has an endowment of $223 million, so I think they are probably last on the list. Central Florida's is even less, which is why I think South Florida has a leg up on them.

I'll just say SMU, BYU, and Boise State could be candidates too. It probably would never happen, but Air Force and Navy might be 2 good additions. Actually, I think they really should add New Mexico so Kansas could win a game every so often....

Adding New Mexico State would be too confusing, their cowboy looks too much like Oklahoma State's (and the schools have sued each other over it too):

I was thinking SMU would be a good invite, but figured the Big 12 wouldn’t want to add two teams from Texas to the three they have already. Plus, TCU is in Fort Worth, so they might object to having a rival in Dallas. I don’t see Boise State getting an invite for the same reason as UCF - a small endowment. BYU would be a good add if they can get over themselves and join a conference.

It might work out. TCU already plays SMU, that's one of their rival schools.

The old Southwest Conference was 8 Texas schools and Arkansas.....

Big 12 expansion: League wants four teams with focus on BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF, per report

It appears as though the Big 12's expansion plans are coming into focus following the sudden departures of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC this summer. The Big 12's preference is to expand by four teams with a specific focus on BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF, according to The Athletic's Max Olson.

The goal of the four-team expansion would be to push the league back to its original 12-member alignment with the four aforementioned teams combining to fill a portion of the vacuum created when the league's top two programs (Texas and Oklahoma) dropped the Big 12.

The Big 12 just wrapped up two days of meetings in which conference decision-makers focused on future membership.

"Following two days of consultation with the athletics directors of the continuing members of the Big 12 conference," commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Wednesday. "The eight ADs remain committed to furthering the Big 12 as one of the nation's premier athletic conferences, and look forward to working with our presidents and chancellors to strengthen the league. Future exploration by the group will continue to center on options that best position the long-term strength of the conference."
