Alex Grinch (DB Coach Wisconsin)

Alex Grinch, highly respected DC for work at Washington State the last two seasons, is considered leading candidate to be Ohio State's 10 assistant/position coach when staff expands on Jan 9. Was rumored to be in the running for DC job before Schiano's aborted departure for Tennessee.

Priming one Mount Union guy to grab another...? Hmm

Would be a great hire but can't see how he fits salary wise. He's making $600,00 now.

According to his new contract, Grinch will receive a $150,000 raise and make$575,000 in 2016. In 2017, his base salary goes up to $600,000, and that increases to $625,000 in 2018.Mar 2, 2016
WSU football coaching staff gets more than half a million in raises after ...
https://www.seattletimes.com/.../wsu-cougars-football-coaching-staff-gets-big-raises-after...
Bill Davis is making $500k, as is Coombs. LJ Sr is only making 470k. The coordinators are making 650 & 700k.

I think it would be pretty easy to sign him up for $600k, as the DC in waiting when Schiano leaves.

So you think the school will put up another 600+ for a 10th position? Pleasantly surprised. Seems like he's leaving Pullman so rather see him as a Buckeye.

After seeing a list of assistants salaries and the number who were over 1 million, none of whom were at OSU, it may be time for some adjustments.

As bizarre as it is for me to even suggest that.
Not bizarre at all, its CFB in 2017. At this point its nornal for HCs to be highest earning public figures in most states!

Looking at his work at Wazzu I think this would be a fantastic hire and selfishly I hope if it goes through he stays around for a handful of years. He improved Wazzu's defense over the last few years to some respectable numbers with way less talent than in Columbus. I'd love to see what he can put on the field with elite talent and coaching alongside some of the best defensive minds in CFB.

LJ needs a freaking raise. Not even a discussion imo.

Considering how much OSU football brings in and Sabans salary alone is about our whole coaching salary, why shouldnt we be able to pay more? If it means continuing success, you invest in those areas. Keep the good ones here longer.
We haven't needed to pay more. If we needed to pay $1 million to get a quality assistant I'm sure we would.

I’m quite sure they would as well. Regardless, given the state of the program, I think that it would be an ant hill compared to a mountain if they just did it regardless of the ‘need to.’ There’s a clear recognition that there’s a two year commitment that is asked when joining the staff... and we’ve clearly seen it honored by the program when it probably wasn’t justified. But for guys who are year 3+ (LJ, Coombs, Smith, others?)... pay ‘em.

Don’t get me wrong, I respect Woody’s perspective. I think it’s a beautiful thing that he did. Perhaps one of the most honorable things a coach could do is to recognize his place in the context of the entire organization of higher learning... but times change. And to be totally clear, I’m not advocating paying first year staff seven-figures like tsun. That’s just stupid... but the guys who have contributed and are loyal to the program should be bumped to the point that they would really need to think about leaving.

Edit: This is one of the benefits of being a “have” vs. a “have not.”
