Bronny James, Taison Chatman among Ohio State recruits at Notre Dame game

Ohio State hosted its four-man 2023 recruiting class plus a pair of potential candidates to fill it out as the football team hosted Notre Dame at Ohio Stadium.

Verbal commitments Scotty Middleton, Austin Parks, Devin Royal and George Washington III were all on campus for official visits, and the same goes for uncommitted, four-star guard Taison Chatman. But the pregame sideline focus was primarily directed at one player who was on an unofficial visit: Bronny James, Lebron James’ son and a member of the 2023 class who is considering the Buckeyes.

James spent about four hours earlier in the day visiting with the program, watching some practice and even taking part in a photoshoot that has become customary with most recruiting visits. When the visit ended around 3:30 p.m., the James family left campus for a few hours but returned roughly an hour before the 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Ohio State basketball loses recruit, could that mean Bronny is coming?

The Ohio State basketball program had a very good recruiting class for 2023. It had four prospects committed and was set up to be Chris Holtmann’s best recruiting class so far. Unfortunately, it has lost the prospect that committed to the program first.

George Washington III has de-committed from the Ohio State basketball program and has re-opened his recruitment. He was the first to commit to this program and has now decided that elsewhere might be better suited for him at this point in time.

The timing here is certainly very interesting. Washington III is a guard and made this decision just two days after another guard in the 2023 class was visiting Ohio State for the Notre Dame game. That prospect is over course Bronny James, the son of basketball legend Lebron James.

Coincidence? I think not. LeBron’s love for Ohio State is well-documented and he was sporting Buckeye attire on the sideline of the season-opener. This was Bronny’s first visit to a college campus and that was a heck of an environment to bring him to.

The Buckeyes would benefit from getting a recruit like Bronny in the program. He’s a four-star guard that is only getting better, although his ceiling is still a question mark. He did indicate in a recent interview that college is something he’s interested in though.

Perhaps Washington III saw the writing on the wall and decided to go elsewhere. Maybe he realized there wouldn’t be enough room in the recruiting class for both of them. It will be a while still before Bronny makes his decision, but this de-commitment timing can’t be a coincidence in my view.

Just sayin': I'll say whatever Bronny decides it will be a "developmental decision" as opposed to a "NIL/money/business decision". LeBron was NBA ready immediately after (hell maybe even a year or 2 before) high school graduation; Bronny won't be. LeBron's goal is to play on the same NBA team with Bronny ASAP. I'll say NIL money isn't an issue here, it's all about getting into the NBA. I'm pretty sure he still has relatives in Ohio, and apparently Bronny and LeBron are Ohio State fans; so I'll say Ohio State has a chance. It could all boil down to (after watching the team play this season and who the guards are) what he thinks his chances of getting significant playing time as a Freshman are.

I think Ohio State would take Bronny if he wants in.

I don't know that Ohio State is going to spend a lot of time and effort trying to get Bronny to come here.

Chatman is the priority right now and I think OSU is willing to leave a door open for Bronny should he eventually decide he wants to be a Buckeye. I don't necessarily think that door closes if we get Chatman, but maybe.

Inside Bronny James' summer before his senior year

i

The Bronny James recruitment tour could heat up in the coming months as the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James begins his senior year of high school basketball.

The 18-year-old prospect, who attends Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California, will tip off the season against the King Drew Magnet Eagles of Los Angeles. His younger brother, Bryce, will also play for the Trailblazers this season as a sophomore.

Bronny is ranked as the No. 34 prospect on the ESPN 100 for the 2023 class and has received scholarship offers from notable teams like the Memphis Tigers and Michigan Wolverines.

Off the court, Bronny has kept himself busy. He has partied like -- and with -- a superstar, experienced college recruitment and took his talents into show business.

Here's what's Bronny has been up to as he starts his senior season in basketball:

Although the younger James does have solid size for a guard, he projects differently from his father due to his measurables and style of play. Adam Finkelstein, 247Sports' Director of Scouting for basketball, recently wrote that James has boosted his stock over the past calendar year and explained why that has been the case.

"First, he’s begun to evolve from a player who can make open shots to one who can make tough shots off the dribble," Finkelstein wrote earlier in January. "He’s improved his pull-up game to become a player who requires much less space to get his shot off than he has in the past. He's also a threat from longer distances. Secondly, his athleticism has started to shine through in the open floor. He’s been attacking with pace while showing a good burst and a lot of mid-air body control.

"Put it all together and you have a guard who should be capable of playing on and off the ball, spacing the floor, being a playmaking threat, plus-defender and a strong overall athlete with a college-ready physique. In other words, he’s more than capable of contributing to winning right away at the high-major level."

Just sayin': If it is down to these three schools....

1. Ohio State = where is parents are from and probably still has lots of friends/relatives living there.
2. Oregon = Lebron has a huge shoe deal with Nike.
3. USC = where Lebron is currently living.

He's rated 4 star by 24/7 and site lists only Ohio State, USC, and Memphis as offering a scholarship.

Bronny James, Kentucky signees lead McDonald's All Americans

Headlined by Bronny James and four Kentucky signees, 22 of the top 23 prospects in the ESPN 100 have been named to the 46th annual McDonald's All American Game.

Only one uncommitted player was selected to this year's roster: Bronny James, son of LeBron James. James, a 6-foot-3 guard from Sierra Canyon High School (California), has consistently improved his game over the course of his high school career and is now considered one of the better two-way guards in the class. He's being recruited by Oregon, Ohio State, USC and others.

FWIW, CBS Sports Reporter (Matt Norlander) thinks it 50/50 between USC and Oregon:

Bronny James is a McDonald's All-American and the four-star son of LeBron James has an upcoming decision on where he will play college basketball next season. Bronny James reportedly has a short list of college basketball programs that he is considering, but the Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon guard and the nation's No. 34 overall recruit via 247Sports can go "anywhere he wants," according to his father. But in a column for CBS Sports this week, Matt Norlander wrote his "read" on James' pending decision revolves around two schools: USC and Oregon.

"USC and Oregon are 50/50. I get why Ohio State was listed among the finalists, but the Buckeyes aren't getting him," Norlander wrote.

The problem with Oregon is Bronny James doesn't actually have a reported scholarship offer from the Ducks yet.

Bronny James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, is expected to make his college decision during the spring after the high school basketball season ends, the Los Angeles Times recently reported. Ohio State, Oregon and USC are the three main schools for the Los Angeles (Calif.) Sierra Canyon star, according to the report. 247Sports’ Adam Finkelstein and Eric Bossi weighed in on James’ recruitment.

“Bronny definitely has a chance to play in the NBA,” Bossi said. “I don’t know if I think he’s a one-and-done type (player) yet, but if that’s your opinion, that’s fine. I think we need to be careful with when and how we are presenting that opinion, we have to do that because it has to be fair to Bronny.”

Finkelstein said that comparing Bronny to his father is unfair and could lead to unrealistic expectations. James is a four-star recruited and is ranked No. 34 nationally, No. 8 at combo guard and No. 8 in the state of California overall.

“My stance on Bronny has pretty much been the same all along,” Finkelstein said. “He does a lot of things that can impact winning. …I just don’t think he’s like the alpha playmaker but he can make shots.

“He has all the tools to impact winning but if you have never seen him play before and you’re coming to see LeBron James Jr., it’s very unlikely you’re going to see him go for 30.”

Watched him in a 3 day tournament last year full of studs and wasn’t impressed at all. Take away the name and you wouldn’t have had a reason to watch him.

Very average player IMO and not very aggressive.

I have watched some film on Bronny and came away pretty unimpressed myself, as you said I don't think he even gets much attention without his name. Having him on the roster might get us good attention, or we get an unwanted second coach in Lebron that turns into a distraction. Not really sure how I want to see this one play out.
