2021 College Football Polls

ESPN releases preseason college football FPI Top 25 rankings

5. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

10190697.jpg

Surprisingly, ESPN's FPI is giving the Buckeyes only a 53% chance at winning the Big Ten this season and a 45% shot at reaching the Playoff. Here's where it really gets interesting for Ryan Day, whose teams brings back a wealth of talent, but loses projected Top 5 pick Justin Fields at quarterback. The early portion of fall camp will go a long way in determining the Buckeyes' new starter at the position since several players have shown flashes this spring. The preseason frontrunners in the Big Ten, Ohio State is hoping to get back to the national championship game.

10. PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS
10123560.jpg

With only a 10% chance of winning the Big Ten this season per ESPN's preseason projections, Penn State already has bulletin board material for this summer. The Nittany Lions deserve a ton of credit for not folding after a winless, disappointing start last fall. James Franklin had his locker room together despite off the field distractions and things out of his team's control and Penn State ended the campaign on a high note despite stumbling short of expectations. Maybe being ranked outside of the Top 15 to start in 2021 will benefit Penn State wearing the cloak of anonymity so to speak. Franklin is confident this group will impress.

15. WISCONSIN BADGERS

It's bounce-back time for the Badgers. ESPN's FPI projects Wisconsin with a 47.7% shot at getting to the league championship game this fall as division champs. It was not necessarily the Badgers' fault last season went awry, but the pandemic limited this team's player availability, wiped away several games and Wisconsin never found consistency. Three times last fall, the Badgers were held to a touchdown or less with empty possessions causing their defense to be on the field too long throughout the campaign. Getting back to the basics — with dominant offensive line play and a standout rushing attack — is the plan in 2021.

23. Iowa Hawkeyes

25. Indiana Hoosiers

Just sayin': It is all going to come down to how well Ohio State's QB plays, etc. The football QB is the most important position in all of team sports.

Also, I must have missed it, what number was scUM ranked?

Really though, I'm praying this is at least somewhat accurate because it gives Michigan a 71 percent chance of getting to six wins, a 2 percent chance of winning the Big Ten East and a 0.7 percent chance of winning the Big Ten with a projected record of 6.4-5.7.

That's... Hilarious.

4. IOWA STATE CYCLONES
10128933.jpg

The highest we've seen the Cyclones ranked in any preseason poll, ESPN's FPI favors Iowa State this fall. Veteran-laden with several All-American candidates on offense and a strong core of experienced starters defensively, the Cyclones believe their 2021 campaign will be a memorable one and end with a Big 12 Championship (and perhaps more). But first, Brock Purdy and Iowa State will have to get through Oklahoma at the top of the conference, a matchup that should be a potential College GameDay choice this fall. Iowa State is a darkhorse national title contender and those odds will continue to improve the closer we get to kickoff.

In an episode of College Football Live on Monday, ESPN analyst and former Alabama signal caller Greg McElroy took issue with ISU's ranking, citing that the Cyclones didn't showcase enough dominance in 2020 to be a top four team entering the 2021 season. McElroy would go on to make the case that Ohio State -- the Buckeyes checked in at No. 5 in the rankings -- would be more worthy of the No. 4 spot than Matt Campbell's group.

"(Iowa State) being at No. 4 is ludicrous," McElroy said on the show. "Ahead of Ohio State? This is at team that, yes, at 9-3, had a heck of a season, won a NY6 and have a lot to be excited about. But five of those nine wins came by a TD or less, and six games were decided by a touchdown or less. It's not like this team was dominant. Whereas on the other side, OSU or some of the other teams behind ISU, they were dominant. I'm not at that point where I can call ISU dominant without seeing something in the fall."

Now that spring practices are beginning to wind down, we’re starting to get some idea of what to expect for the 2021 season. Kinda.

Even though we’re still months away from the first kickoff of the college football season, 247Sports is making some way-too-early bowl projections for the end of next season. And while the site didn’t include every bowl game in its recent predictions, it did take a look at some of the marquee postseason games.

Six B1G teams are expected to land in “significant” bowl games at the end of next season. A few more might reach bowl eligibility at the end of the year, but those were not included in 247Sports’ most recent analysis.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl

Indiana vs. Boston College

Music City Bowl
Iowa vs. Ole Miss

Outback Bowl
Michigan vs. Texas A&M

Citrus Bowl
Penn State vs. Florida

Rose Bowl
Wisconsin vs. USC

Cotton Bowl (College Football Playoff)
Ohio State vs. Alabama
