BP Recruiting Team

Since I post so much on here, you are all going to have to suffer one small thread about this team. I am going to use one thread to post schedules, scores, match reports, etc. I am starting with the upcoming Spring season which includes the sweet 16 in Colorado Springs in April. This team appreciates any and all support it gets, and I know I can count on the folks at BP.

Also, as I understand it from wadc, tOSU will be entering two teams in the Ohio Rugby Classic Tournament in Columbus April 23/24. Yes, that is the weekend of the spring game. I am coming up for the tailgate and game and to hopefully play some rugby on that Sunday. BPers and other Buckeyes in the area should come out and support tOSU Rugby. Come see the Buckeyes play the game they play in heaven.

The OSU A side defeated the Indy Men's team 16-5. The OSU B side lost to the Dayton A side 17-3. By all accounts, neither game was pretty to watch. But a victory for the A's against a decent men's team is always welcomed. While also studying for finals this week, the team will have a short week of practice before departing for California on Thursday for a mini-tour while on spring break. The next home game is April 2nd against TSUN. Contrary to recent results, this game against Michigan actually figures to be competitive. More to follow...

The festivities in California this weekend start on Saturday, as #4 Ohio State takes on the #18 Dartmouth Big Green. The other game will see the #1 Cal-Berkeley Golden Bears take on the Oregon Ducks (great excuse for the old school logo). The winners and losers will meet on Sunday. The team will stay in California through 3/24 on spring break while also practicing with Cal. It should be a great experience, training with the best team the country while preparing for the Sweet 16 in April. Then the team returns home for a solid week of practice leading up to the showdown with TSUN on 4/2.

How active is SASOL in sponsorships? They are a large South African firm that first mastered oil from coal. Expanding worldwide. Big rugby sponsors.

Right now they are the largest sponsor of the South African national team, the Springboks...

I think the US will eventually be a competitive team on the international stage...if you look at where rugby in the US is today as opposed to where soccer was in the US around the same time after the sport's inception, we are actually a bit ahead of schedule comparatively. But until we begin to erase some of the stigmas attached to rugby and develop some better youth program in more that just a handful of states (like we have in Ohio), the sport is always going to be an afterthought.

Obviously my internal clock has not adjusted to CA time yet because this is the second morning I am up at around 5 or 6 local time. The Buckeyes handed out a beatdown of epic proportions yesterday, crushing #18 Dartmouth 61-7. Today's matchup features #4 Ohio State versus #1 Cal-Berkeley.

Here is a write-up on the Dartmouth win:

Ohio State, Cal Win in Berkeley
By Alex Goff
March 19, 2005 - Ohio State and the University of California will meet in the Cal Invitational final Sunday afternoon after each won convincingly in Saturday's matches.
Ohio State were clinical in the early going, handling a game Dartmouth side (whose head coach Alex Magleby is with the USA 7s team in Hong Kong) and taking a 41-0 halftime lead. Dartmouth made some inroads, and looked more competitive than the score might indicate.
It was more of the same in the second half, although Dartmouth did put in a few fixes, scoring a try in the 61-7 loss.
Cal then faced Oregon and put together a typical, if somewhat porous, performance in winning 64-29.

The disparity in collegiate rugby was apparent again today. After putting out a lineup card on Saturday against Oregon that read something like Freshman, Freshman, Freshman, Freshman, Sophmore, Freshman, etc., #1 Cal-Berkeley played host to the #4 Buckeyes on Sunday with a lineup that featured their top 15. Sunday's lineup card read more like Senior, Senior, Senior, Junior, Senior, Senior, etc. Having played a game the day before, fitness and health were early factors as two key players for the Buckeyes were foced off with cramps and/or minor injuries. Cal came out like a bat out of hell and stunned OSU a bit. Once they got up early, they never looked back. Here is a write up of the game:

Varsity Wins Cal Invitational

Vontz, Hanks and Lindsey score two tries each in 10-try haul.

March 20, 2005

BERKELEY - The Cal Varsity Rugby team defeated Midwestern Champion Ohio State, 58-6 in the championship match of the California Invitational. This weekend's two victories, over Oregon and Ohio State, takes the Golden Bears' season record to 15-0. The Bears travel to Vancouver on Tuesday, to play UBC in the away fixture of the annual home and away series between the two universities.

The Bears were able to capitalize on the depth they have developed over the past season as the line up featured 15 changes from the team that defeated Oregon 69-29 on Saturday. Skipper Tony Vontz, Andrew Lindsey and Andy Hanks, scored a brace apiece as Rikus Pretorius, Ryan Donnelly, Louis Stanfill, and Andrew Blair each touched down once. Blair added four more conversions to his season tally.

Cal looked as if it were shot out of a cannon in the opening exchanges running the ball and hitting rucks with terminal velocity. Despite the Bears' frenetic pace, Ohio State was physical and defended heroically. However all of this possession going forward allowed Pretorius to score the first try just minutes into the match.

Throughout the afternoon the Cal forwards provided a rock solid platform at the scrum and line of touch for the backline to launch attacks from. Led by Stanfill, the pack was determined to put a stamp on the match, driving in a lineout for a try from 25 meters out, much to the delight of the capacity home crowd. Lindsey was explosive, from the base of the scrum and Pretorius cleaned up lots of loose balls on the deck.

The Cal backline also fired with dynamic precision. Donnelly's powerful running in the centers combined with Blair's well-timed insertions created plenty of space outwide for Hanks, always a crowd pleaser, whose slick and elusive running turned the corner on his opposite several times.

"It was a solid victory over a quality team, but more importantly we appear to still be on the track of an improving team," commented Varsity Rugby Head Coach Jack Clark.

In the consolation final, Dartmouth defeated the Oregon Ducks, 25-24.

The Scoring Timeline:

4:00 Rikus Pretorius 5, Andrew Blair 2

10:00 Tony Vontz 5, Andrew Blair 2

25:00 Andy Hanks 5

35:00 Andrew Lindsey 5

Halftime Score: California 24, Ohio State 0

41:00 Ohio State 3 (Drop Goal) Tonderai Kambarami

43:00 Ryan Donnelley 5, Andrew Blair 2

49:00 Tony Vontz 5

53:00 Ohio State 3 (Drop Goal) Tonderai Kambarami

58:00 Louis Stanfill 5

61:00 Andrew Lindsey 5, Andrew Blair 2

73:00 Andrew Blair 5

81:00 Andrew Hanks 5

Final Score: California 58, Ohio State 6

Just got some updated info on St. Mary's this morning. So far this Spring they have compiled an impressive record, with wins over Chico State, Arizona, #12 Sacramento State, Cal-Davis, Nevada, and Stanford. Their only losses so far have been to #1 Cal-Berkeley and #8 Army. This game should be another good measuring stick to see just how good we are at this point in the season. Right now, we aren't sure what to think after rolling over Dartmouth and then being on the other end of a lopsided score the next day. That's all from CA...

Cheers!
