AROUND OHIO 2010

Years ago, John McCallister wrote a column for a magazine called Scarlet & Gray Illustrated. The column was called "Around The State" and every week he wrote about college prospects whom he had seen play the week prior. At times, he also offered insight to other areas of high school football recruiting. The column was successful, but the magazine was not. Around Ohio with MSR Ohio is an attempt to offer a different informative source to readers.

Bryan Cox - Like Father, Like Son

The city of Avon is growing by leaps and bounds, as is the Avon High School football program. Currently 7-0, one of Avon's leaders both on and off the field is junior Bryan Cox. He is following in the footsteps is dad, Bryan. The same Bryan Cox who was once the vocal leader of the New England Patriots back in their Super Bowl run. Dad now coaches for the Cleveland Browns. Son is the starting DE or OLB for Avon High School.

First saw Bryan at our combine back in March. Passed the eyeball test.(6'3-225). Performed very well in the Pro-shuttle and 40. At that time, you could see his potential. You could also feel his very tough competitive attitude.

Cox is the kid fans don't know about. You will. He is the son of former NFL great Brian Cox. He has an explosive first step, great athleticism and has the same motor and nasty streak that might carry his Dad to the Hall of Fame. Here is his ScoutingOhio promo to give you a look at this new name on the list: http://scoutingohio.com/index.php/view-profile.html?task=userProfile&user=5068 Cox has the length I want to see in a defensive end and can add the weight to be a full fledged 4-3 hand in the dirt defensive end. Great speed with Cox and an explosive hitter. He is definitely on the Buckeyes radar so make note of him.

Bryan Cox Jr. drawing more interest

One of the top 2012 prospects from the Midwest that made the trip down to Orlando last week for Under-Armour combine was Bryan Cox Jr. (Avon, Ohio/Avon). The 6-foot-3, 220-pound defensive end could end up playing linebacker. Cox has two scholarship offers and several schools have been in touch.

"North Carolina and Kent State are my scholarship offers right now," Cox said. "I'm hearing from schools in just about every conference. I'd say that LSU, Michigan State, USC and Ohio State have been in contact the most. I've been to Ohio State, Michigan State and Penn State on unofficial visits.

"I couldn't begin to name any early favorites. I have a lot of schools in mind. I'm interested in schools in the SEC. I'm interested in USC and I'd camp out there this summer if they didn't go full pads. Going full pads at a camp would make me ineligible for my senior year."

Cox is the son of former NFL linebacker Bryan Cox.

"The only thing my dad has said is for me to be absolutely sure before I give a school my verbal commitment," Cox said. "My dad said that once I commit, he's not going to let me back out because that lacks integrity."

Cox had 38 solo tackles in 2010 and was an all-county selection.
