We are The Ohio State University - 34 Big Ten championships, 7 national championships, 7 Heisman Trophy winners, dozens of All Americans. You can call us Ohio State, OSU, the Buckeyes, the Men of Scarlet and Gray, we're cool with all of them. And yes, Brady, you can even call us Ohio.
Ohio State is flagship institution of the State of Ohio - it is the biggest and the best, it has the highest endowment, it performs the most research, and it is located in the state capital. And Ohio State also has the best football team in the state, a fact that has been proven repeatedly over the past hundred years. Ohio State represents the entire state, and that's why a lifelong Ohioan like me, who has no formal connection to the school, can call myself a Buckeye.
Because Ohio State represents Ohio, feel free to call us Ohio. We often do. Our alma mater is Carmen Ohio, with lyrics like "Oh come let's sing Ohio's praise ... how dearly we love Ohio ... as sturdy sons of Ohio ... How firm thy friendship ... OHIO!" Lots of talk of Ohio, not a single mention of Ohio State.
Our fight song is Across the Field: "Fight the team across the field, show them Ohio's here!" Or if you prefer, the Buckeye Battle Cry: "Our honor defend so we'll fight to the end for Ohio!" Or our version of Hang On, Sloopy, with the O-H-I-O chant inserted into the lyrics. And of course: "We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, we're from OHIO!" We sing our fight songs in Ohio Stadium, where our band performs Script Ohio and Diamond Ohio and our cheerleaders carry flags and placards spelling out OHIO.
When we greet each other, one party calls out: "OH..!" while the other responds "...IO!" When we gather for group pictures, we form "OHIO" with our arms. Our logo is a simple Block O, for Ohio, sometimes shown with a Buckeye leaf, the state tree of Ohio.
So when a soon-to-be-fired coach from a certain state up north refers to us as Ohio, don't let it bother you. Consider the source and embrace it! Only a bitter traitor whose treacherous career has defined failure could attempt to use the word "Ohio" in a derogatory manner. We are The Ohio State University Buckeyes, and we are O-HI-O.
